It was great to see such a good turn out for BBUGS first webinar presentations for the year. A big thank you to our keynote speakers Hamed Ramandi, UNSW, and Terri O’Sullivan, Centennial, for their presentations.

Hamed presented “How do intact roof bolts fail due to corrosion in underground mines where the corrosion rate is low?” which looked at the various factors that lead to corrosion of underground strata support. UNSW is also looking into methods to prevent or reduce the corrosive effects of mine water and bacteria on roof support. Please reach out to Hamed at UNSW if your mine would like more information on protective coatings for roof support.

Terri shared her insights into the challenging geotechnical conditions at Springvale mine as well as the importance of a wholistic approach to geotechnical support design, which includes the floor. She also highlighted how longwall extraction can influence nearby, and not so nearby, mining and roadway conditions particularly if geological structure is present.
