Thanks to all who attended the BBUGS ACARP project update in Moranbah last week. With 40 people attending in person and 50 online is was a great turn out. It was good to see so many people turn up in person, which resulted in some robust technical discussions and networking opportunities.

These meetings are a good opportunity to discuss learnings from hazard identifications and incidents to increase safety awareness and to share knowledge around hazard prevention and control.  Thanks to DSI for presenting at this meeting and the discussion around the controls put in place.

A big thank you to the presenters who provided updates on their ACARP projects. There is a lot of high quality and interesting research going on in the geotechnical space at the moment. A recurring theme in a lot of projects this year was the use of AI and machine learning to analyse large quantities of data and develop models to improve the safety and productivity of underground mining.

This year we were lucky enough to have the following presenters and their projects:

Ian Gray – ACARP Project Number C29012: Longwall Rock Mechanics in Massive Strata

Zhongwei Chen – ACARP Project Number C33031: Reducing the Subjectivity of CMRR Calculation using Machine Learning

Adam Lines – ACARP Project Number C33073: Understanding Horizontal Closure and it Impact on Deformation and Height of Fracturing

Richard Campbell – ACARP Project Number C34067: Optimisation of Ground Consolidation Practises in Longwall Coal Mining Applications

Jason Emery – ACARP Project Number C27070: Novel Data Analytics Applied to Mechanical Roof Extensometer Data

Rhys Pitchers – ACARP Project Number C28012: Microfracture Analysis as a Trigger for Coal Bursts

Claire Pirona – ACARP Project Number C29079: Use of Thin Spray Liners in Underground Coal Mines: Mechanisms, Testing and Design Methodology.

Presentations can be found in the BBUGS Past event page. Please contact a member of the BBUGS council for access to this page.
